Adult stem cells are credited for saving a baseball pitcher’s career. Bartolo Colon was one of the major league’s top pitchers, even getting the American League Cy Young award. But shoulder and elbow injuries sidelined him. Every pitch was painful, so he returned to the Dominican Republic in defeat. Then an orthopedic surgeon extracted Bartolo’s stem cells from his fat and bone marrow. They were injected into his elbow and shoulder to repair ligament damage and a torn rotator cuff. The procedure took less than an hour. Within a month he was working out. In no time Bartolo was a hit in the Dominican league, and in January the New York Yankees signed him to a contract. It’s said adult stem cells are the future of sports medicine. Who needs embryonic stem cells?
