A strong odor led police in Bangkok, Thailand to a Buddhist temple. They found the bodies of over two-thousand babies, the victims of illegal abortions. Mortuaries commonly exist in temples as a place to cremate the remains of the deceased. In this case, an illegal abortionist paid morticians to collect the babies’ bodies and burn them. They’ve been collecting them for over a year and it’s not clear why they haven’t been cremated. Buddhist worshippers who got word of the grisly finding left offerings for the babies—milk and bananas to nourish their spirits in the afterlife. Abortion is illegal in Thailand, except in cases of life of the mother, rape and a disabled child. Several people have been arrested, but I wonder what horrors are hidden in other Buddhist temples.
